As the end of my maternity leave approached, I realised something important. I wasn’t ready to go back to work. And yet I had to prepare myself, physical, emotionally and intellectually. I didn’t want to spend 5 days a week away from my son. Unfortunately, that was unnegotiable. I simply had to. We couldn’t afford for me to stop work completely and so I made the decision to ask to reduce my hours at my workplace. The conversation did not go well. So badly in fact that I was looking for work almost immediately after broaching the conversation with my then boss. I had looked for a new role before but not when my hormones were still levelling and not when levels of tiredness were simply unexplainable. To be honest there was a mild sense of panic, anchored in the belief that I couldn’t possibly be able to function in an office again, let alone in a new place of work. I went through the motions of updating my CV etc. but then fate threw me a chance. A chance meeting with an ex-colleague of mine who had already moved onwards and upwards into another company and in another sector. This led to a conversation about growth and my goals, ultimately leading to a job offer. A coach can help you explore the power of networking and of your own personal connections, enabling you to see opportunities in the job market.
